Do You Limit God?

Do You Limit God?

Yes, again and again they tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. — Psalm 78:41

In Psalm 78, Asaph, the psalmist, recounts God’s kindness to rebellious Israel. The psalm is filled with the wonders God performed on behalf of His chosen nation. Many verses are profound, but verses 18 through 20 really speak to me. “And they tested God in their heart by asking for the food of their fancy. Yes, they spoke against God: They said, ‘Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? Behold, He struck the rock, so that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can He give bread also? Can He provide meat for His people?’”

When I disregard what God has done for me, I’m really saying, “He did that before, but can He do this? That’s too big for Him.” I put God inside a box. I limit Him. I don’t believe He is able to meet my every need.

What about you? Do you limit God?

I encourage you to read Psalm 78, and focus on the marvelous works God performed. God has not changed. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

Father, so often we limit You. We think You are capable of some things but not others. How this must grieve You. Lord, I confess I do this more often than I like. Please forgive me, and give me the grace to trust You more.

Help this reader, Father, to give her cares, concerns, and worries to You. May she believe You are able to meet her every need, and may she place her trust in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
